Lima Restaurant & Lounge | Washington, DC
Jul 15, 2008 - So this is the first lounge with all retro dance and house music playing all night I've been to in DC--it's hard to dance to this stuff, but it's a good place to chill. With plenty of couches and patio chairs set up in front of the lounge, guests can lounge outside on a warm DC night or head inside for drinks and dancing. We got table service--it was $200 for a bottle of Absolut and $275 for Goose. Since it was a birthday bash, they tightened the tip of the vodka bottle with a sparkler, a snazzy touch, and served it up with OJ, cranberry juice, and Red Bull. There are only four bathrooms (2 women, 2 men) in the entire place, so be ready to wait! Oh, and if you think lemon drops are weak , think again. Lima has a version of their own...
Spy Bar | Nashville, TN
Jun 17, 2008 - It was my first time in Nashville and supposedly this is the play to go on weekends. It was alright--bar staff was okay, with a mixed crowd, and mediocre DJ.
Howling Wolf | New Orleans, LA
Jun 17, 2008 - This bar was incredibly large--probably one of the most spacious bars in NOLA. Since it was a private party, our group had our own DJ and didn't make use of their stage (meant for live performances). The bar staff was incredibly nice and patience despite our rowdy crowd. This would be a great place for large gatherings,...only wish I would see the live acts at this venue.
Smith Point | Washington, DC
Jun 15, 2008 - Smith Point is one of the biggest Georgetown parties located on Wisconsin and O St, but it's not my cup 'o tea. My group walked past an easy-going bouncer from a narrow entryway to a large dancefloor and bar area. We instantly increased the diversity from zilch to maybe 1%. The place is hopping with white boys bouncing around with popped-collar pink polos with no rhythm, and the music def catered to this crowd (wasn't too shabby, lots of old school rap/hip-hop). All in all, the crowd needs more style! Break away from the Lacoste, khakis, and Lily Pulitzer please!
Tabard Inn | Washington, DC
Jun 08, 2008 - You should not go here for dinner--the entrees are decent, but overpriced and very limited. However, I hear the breakfast and brunch are supposed to be great. Saturday brunch! Yes, it exists. The ambiance deserves returning to--there are live jazz performances and this restaurant/bar is also a hotel! You can book a room here during your stay in D.C. It's located in Dupont Circle--close enough to walk to all the fun places, but far enough to give you privacy and peace of mind.
Lotus Lounge | Washington, DC
Jun 07, 2008 - Great music. I don't think I've ever been to a lounge with quality speakers and a diverse range of musical mixes until I was at Lotus on Saturday night for a charity fundraising party for Becky's Fund (started up by Becky Lee of Survivor). There was a white dress theme, and Becky was at the door greeting us and stamping wrists. Things got interesting when there were bursts of cool air coming from the ceiling in sync with the music. Oh, and don't forget to grab some some sushi while you're there. Yes, it's still served--tables are reserve only after 10:30PM.
Dinner hours: Tues-Sat 5:30PM to 9:00PM; Friday Happy Hour Special Open Bar from 7-9PM for $25
The Quarter Bar | Dallas, TX
Jun 06, 2008 - Quarter Bar is all about ambiance--finely decorated with plump button leather chairs, red tones, vintage posters, outdoor seating, and dim lighting--I felt like I was in an old English pub where rich men came to converse about money and power over brandy and smoke cigars. For the modern day yuppies, it's a great place to take a date and have a drink post-dinner.
Spiderhouse Cafe | Austin, TX
May 29, 2008 - From espresso to red wine, this quirky coffee shop and eatery has it all! Far from pretentious, Spiderhouse exudes "Keep Austin Weird" vibes and typically has classic films featured on specified days, in addition to live DJs on weekends. Ambiance is dim, mellow, and navigating this place can be like a maze sometimes. Guys, take your date here--but tell her to leave her high heels at home and slip on some flip flops.
Tabaq | Washington, DC
May 03, 2008 - From the outside, you would never realize what a beautifully structured and decorated this restaurant/bar is. Located in the historic U Street area, Tabaq has four floors: glass terrace, art room, red room, and a lounge. I went up to the 3rd floor (red room) to meet up some of my friends, and as I climbed up the stairs, was greeted by an artist jamming to an African drum. The drinks were average priced (for a lounge) and each of the floors seemed to house a large presence of either Whites, Blacks/African Americans, or Asians.
I didn't get a chance to go up to the other floors, but the red room is an ideal place to take a date and converse over a drink amidst a multicultural and diverse environment.
Obar | Dallas, TX
May 03, 2008 - Besides the crazy parking and traffic to get to Obar on weekends, this bar has a unique duality. On the one hand, it can be appropriate for those who want to sip on drinks and chill on couches and talk on the outdoor patio; on the other hand, there's an area to really get yo groove on and dance.
Panache | Washington, DC
May 03, 2008 - I haven't had the food here (but it's supposed to be superb), Panache is located near Georgetown University, and as a result, attracts many college students. This restaurant-turned-late-night-lounge has lots of comfy couches and a convenient complimentary coat check with a decent dance floor size. It was my first time at a Georgetown hangout, and I found it amusing that the men typically wear sport jackets and ties.
Ghostbar | Dallas, TX
Apr 30, 2008 - pros: outdoor terrace
cons: pretentious, but people love this place! there's a ridiculous VIP list every weekend and even though you're on it (which you'd need to know a friend, who's a friend of a friend, who's the DJ,...you know the drill) you have to wait b/c they hold the line. at any rate, it's a beautiful and modern bar inside and out.
Copa Bar & Grill | Austin, TX
Apr 30, 2008 - SALSA DANCING thursdays! come learn the meaning of "the people are sleeping upstairs, but the party is bumpin' downstairs!"
Karma | Austin, TX
Apr 30, 2008 - this venue is an outlier--it's farther away from most of the bars and clubs around 6th/4th/warehouse district.
Buffalo Billiards | Austin, TX
Apr 30, 2008 - very strict door policy. plenty of pool tables and floor space. this venue doesn't get very packed unless there are parties organized.
Chuggin' Monkey | Austin, TX
Apr 30, 2008 - this is one of those places you go in for a few shots and leave. nothing too special here, except for the adorable sign and name ;O)
Madam's Organ | Washington, DC
Apr 30, 2008 - located in adam's morgan, this popular DC bar is one of my favorite spots to chill. it's laid back, has cheap drinks, and isn't pretentious. reminds me of 6th Street venues in Austin, TX. love it here :)
1223/Spank | Washington, DC
Apr 30, 2008 - located in dupont circle, 1223 attracts a very diverse crowd on certain weekends for "international night". the music here is great--i don't think i was sitting at all during my time here.
Cafe Asia | Washington, DC
Apr 30, 2008 - i was here for a charity fashion show last week. this restaurant-turned-club was roomy, had a friendly bar staff, and had a VIP area upstairs with comfy couches and an open bar. the music was sorta a drag, but there were some good beats here and there.
Busboys and Poets | Washington, DC
Apr 30, 2008 - this is one of my favorite places in DC. located on 14th, this venue is hard to categorize just as a lounge, b/c it's all of the below:
+coffee shop
+eclectic bookshop
+friendly bar
+ restaurant
+ open mic
...and it has the most amazing banana bread pudding a la mode. the service is superb, the food scrumptious, and an eccentric yet comforting ambiance. writing about this makes me want to go back, now.
Vicci | Austin, TX
Apr 30, 2008 - this is one of the newer places in the warehouse district. it seems to attract an older crowd and gives off a very glitzy/sleezy vegas feeling. it's more a lounging place, hence i wouldn't say it's as much fun (or laid back) as other places in the area.
Cheers Shot Bar | Austin, TX
Apr 30, 2008 - two words: blue wave
order it.
i went here once for a birthday shot and it was unforgettable.
Pete's Dueling Piano Bar | Austin, TX
Apr 30, 2008 - everytime i've been to pete's there is always a bachelorette party of some sort. they play a lot of tunes that are typical of karaoke, but it gets redundant. there's only so many times you can scream your heart out to bon jovi and journey. they need some more variety,...not to mention cleaner floors.
The Aquarium on 6th | Austin, TX
Apr 30, 2008 - everytime i hear 'the aquarium', it's probably someone's birthday and they wanted a free X-L tshirt. yeah, no one really wears it, but you go there b/c it's a free t-shirt on your birthday. this place is always packed and it takes a helluva long time to get a drink order in.
regardless, free t-shirt brings the masses.
Soho Lounge | Austin, TX
Apr 30, 2008 - this is one of the larger venues on 6th street--has large dance floors on bottom and top floors with cheap drinks--$2 wells an domestics
Stubb's | Austin, TX
Apr 30, 2008 - i <3 stubb's. they attract very popular names from many different genres. the sound quality of this venue is decent, given it's outdoors. there is an indoor restaurant and picnic benches to dine outside, as well as bars both indoors and out.
Latitude 30 | Austin, TX
Apr 30, 2008 - oh, latitude. the door policy here is easy. the music is almost always hip-hop/rap, and there's usually an asian and black crowd here. dance floor is spacious with a stage equipped with a large fan--perfect for looking ridiculously good while showing off your dance moves.
Treasure Island | Austin, TX
Apr 30, 2008 - this is always the place my friends and i end up nearing closing time. yeah, it may be ghetto with some thugs here and there, but there's cheap drinks, fun music, and fans to cool you off (since the club is typically hot and humid).
Karma | Dallas, TX
Apr 30, 2008 - overall, i always have a good time at karma. it's the proverbial asian hangout (thursdays) and you pretty much see the same faces each week. the dance floor is HUGE but always packed on the weekends.
Bar Austin | Austin, TX
Apr 30, 2008 - this place brings back good memories. they're not very strict on dress code, so it's relatively easy to get in. it's small on the inside and can get overcrowded. $2 anything drink specials until 11PM friday & saturday
Cuba Libre | Austin, TX
Apr 30, 2008 - the mojitos here are delicious; you can buy them by the glass or pitcher if you have a big crowd. besides getting hit on by a bisexual/lesbian(maybe?) here, it was a good time
Apple Bar | Austin, TX
Apr 30, 2008 - good-looking bartenders who can't make martinis--the apple martini was interesting because they actually a slice of apple in it. but it was way too sour.
The Park at Fourteenth | Washington, DC
Apr 25, 2008 - This four-level upscale lounge is one of the finest venues in DC. Located on 14th and K St, The Park is tough to get in (requires list, otherwise long wait), has a strict dress codes (guys, no athletic wear/jeans; girls, party dresses, etc), and attracts celebrities and athletes. Lebron James, DeShawn, K.Durant, amongst others this past Thurs.
Woo Lae Oak | Vienna, VA
Apr 20, 2008 - I went here for a private party, so I can't say much to the types of drinks at their bar. There is garage parking for free right underneath the restaurant. You go up the elevator to get to the restaurant level and there is a bar on that floor. Our private party was on the 2nd floor--we had our own bartender. The dance floor was spacious and venue was nice and clean--typical of a hotel ballroom space.
La Zona Rosa | Austin, TX
Mar 26, 2008 - This place brings back good memories. I saw Keane and Alkaline Trio here a few years ago, and I'd have to say it's one of the better music venues in ATX with decent drink prices, spacious grounds, and eccletic mix of people. Compared to Emo's, I'd say La Zona Rosa has better sound quality.
The Reef | Washington, DC
Mar 26, 2008 - By the sign outside the door, which said, "No dress code", I knew this was a chill place. All three levels has a bar, and there was no cover charge. The first floor bar was very small, the size of a bedroom--with leopard stripped coaches--this area was enclosed by a red curtain and was very quiet and intimate. The second floor bar is larger, louder, and had aquariums all around with booths alongside the walls. The music on this level was a bit too loud to hold a conversation--but at least the wait staff and bartenders do a good job of reading your lips when they're taking the orders. The third floor is a large patio sitting area where people mainly sit, drink, and converse.
Chloe | Washington, DC
Mar 26, 2008 - Chloe is located in the popular Adam's Morgan hangout in DC. The music was the best part of this club--from pop, hip-hop, electronic, 80s, and rock--they've got it covered! Not many venues can produce a mix that's easy to dance with all these genres. Impressive.
