Mugshots  | Austin, TX

Dec 13, 2009 - I've only been to Mugshots a couple times, since I'm usually closer to Jackalope if I'm looking for a dive downtown.

Both times have been great experiences, however. Cheap drinks, great people on both sides of the bar, and a nice few tables outside.

It's not a perfect 5, the patio could do with being larger, and usually the jukebox selections are drowned out by the bar next door. Which leads to some strange techno remix songs, I can tell you.

Bender Bar and Grill  | Austin, TX

Apr 18, 2009 - Finally! I've found a great neighborhood bar in South Austin that caters to my exacting requirements: Cheap, reasonably busy, and has a great back patio. The fact that the food here is FANTASTIC is just a bonus, and goes well with the cheap drinks.

Bender is owned by the same fellows who own Barfly's, and if you've been there you know the service is always courteous and the vibe is always relaxed.

I've been here about once a week since we started going, and this tradition will probably continue. If you live in South Austin and have been looking for a great place to go, give Bender a shot!

Spiderhouse Cafe  | Austin, TX

May 28, 2008 - The thing about Spiderhouse Cafe is that anything goes. No matter what you're wearing, drinking, or saying, you'll be comfortable here. The outdoor seating area, even in the dead of winter, is a wonderful place to sit, and Spiderhouse is one of the few coffeeshops I've been to with full table service until 2 in the morning. Some of the first dates I ever went on with my girlfriend were here, and it was a fantastic place to relax and talk. Year and a half later, I find it's good to just go here every once in a while, hang out with her and my laptop, and just chill. Fantastic place.

La Zona Rosa  | Austin, TX

May 28, 2008 - La Zona Rosa is a touchy topic for me sometimes. On the one hand, I've seen a few of my favorite bands perform here. On the other hand, I'm a front-row-center concertgoer, and for me, La Zona Rosa has miserable sound quality. I could barely hear any of the vocals, and it all sounded distorted. This isn't unique to LZR, of course, and it won't stop me seeing great bands there, but it may make me think twice next time I see a show I want to go to here.
