By far one of the most fun bars I've been to in Austin. Throughout the day you'll see students enjoying bar food, drinking cheap local drafts, studying!!! In a bar?!?! That's right, hole is located directly across from UT campus, and is infamous for it's relaxed atmosphere and amazing music playing everynight. I consider it a "mini-Antones", as this is one of the few places where you'll pay less than five bucks (if you have to pay at all) to see some of the best bluegrass, honky tonk, indie-rock, and even progressive metal bands that Austin has to offer. Tuesday nights cater to the East Cameron boys with bands like "Bankrupt and the Borrowers" or "The Bread" blasting your ears full of amazing guitar, and offering up 3 dollar whiskey shots of Bullet! I'll take that for sure! (over 2 years ago)
The Hole in the Wall is an Austin institution. It closed down for a few months in 2005/2006(?) but reopened under new management. The crowd went a little younger, more UT students, but that is a good thing. Depending on the band you get slightly different crowds.
Happy hour on Fridays can be pretty cool. It's nice because it is one of the only bars in that immediate area of where Guadalupe and Dean Keaton meet. Since the Showdown is gone (used to be right next to the TAOS COOP right up street) some of the regulars from the Showdown have moved over to the Hole in Wall.
It can be very loud when they got a band playing, but that is really good if the band is good. And, if the band is lame, you just go the the back. Also, if you want to talk you just go to the back.
This place used to be infamous with the ladies because if you went in two at a time you had to pee right next to each other, no divider between. Next time I go I will ask my friends whether that is still the case.
On the whole, the Hole is great place to have a beer, see a band and hang out with friends. (over 2 years ago)
I hung out at Hole in the Wall with a couple friends on a Thursday night. I think this place has been around for a long time. Pretty decent little dive bar, decent beer prices (a few good beers on tap), apparently they serve food but I was there after the kitchen had already closed. The place is comprised of 2 main rooms (both pretty similar) and a small outside section. The front room had some god awful bands playing "music" WAY too damn loud (no conversation could be had) so we moved to the back room, had a few beers, played pool, hung out, etc. To its credit, the place doesn't seem pretentious at all - what you see is what you get.
